World War II was a worldwide war that lasted from 1939-1945. There was 2 sides the Axis powers and the Allies. The Axis powers included Nazi Germany, Italy, and the Empire of Japan while the Allies included Great Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union. There were 2 different theaters as well, the European theater and the Pacific Theater. The US did not get involved in the war until December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Then the US declared war on Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire. In 1945, the US and its allies defeated Nazi Germany, which ended the war in Europe. Then the US turned their attention to the Pacific theater where the US was still battling the Empire of Japan. To end the war, President Truman decided to drop 2 atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After dropping the bombs, Japan surrendered in late 1945, which ended the war in the Pacific theater. In the end, 50 million people died and 2 super powers arose, the US and the USSR, which started the Cold War that did not end until the early 1990s (Edlarkin).
